Four Miami Dade College students were surprised with "life-changing news" this week: They'd been named recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides up to $55,000 a year to complete a bachelor's degree, the Miami Herald reports.

"Watch the heartwarming moment when we surprised our students with the life-changing news that they've been selected as recipients of the scholarship," the college posted on Facebook.

The students were chosen from nearly 1,700 applications from more than 380 community colleges.

The scholarship, which has been awarded to more than 3,300 students since its inception in 2000, is "highly competitive," the Herald notes, with students competing against students from some of the nation's top four-year colleges.

The four recipients:Velourde Borgella: A certified nursing assistant who plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing; she's also a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Waves the Yes Club, and Single Stop; and she's served as the public coordinator for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and vice president of the Haitian IBO Club.
